Act II

Hansel and Gretel - Act II

As the second act of our opera begins, Hansel and Gretel have wandered deep, deep into the forest picking berries. A cuckoo bird is heard and Hansel tries to imitate it. It is growing dark and Hansel admits that they are lost - Gretel becomes frightened. The Sandman appears and scatters his magic sand over their eyes. The children grow tired, and kneeling down, they say their evening prayer: "Now I lay me down to sleep, fourteen angels my soul to keep." As the act ends, Hansel and Gretel fall into a deep sleep, and their fourteen angels appear to guard them through the night.
